Certification May Earn College Credit
Microsoft Office Specialist certifications for Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook have each been recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE) for one semester hour of lower division, college credit. Review the specific credit recommendation for each certification.
The ACE Credit by Examination Program has saved students, parents, and employers millions of dollars in college tuition costs by allowing high school and college students to "test out" of college requirements. With the cost per college hour ranging from $275 to $750, students intent on achieving a college degree now have the potential to save money and time with Office Specialist certification.
Individuals who currently hold or are pursuing Office Specialist certifications will be able to apply for college credit through participating ACE member institutions. Interested students must pass an Office Specialist certification exam for one or more Microsoft Office applications and have their certification(s) listed on an ACE Credit by Examination transcript.
The 1,200 United States colleges and universities that comprise ACE membership rely upon ACE credit recommendations to formulate their own policies regarding credit for Microsoft Office Specialist certification. Ultimately, however, the college or university you attend (or plan to attend) will independently decide whether to grant credit and waive associated tuition requirements. Contact the admissions office at your institution or the institution you plan to attend and inquire about their policy. If your institution refuses to award credit, ACE can intervene to educate the institution and advocate on your behalf.
In order to obtain ACE credit assistance at a participating college or university, ACE must verify your Office Specialist certification(s) and then list those certification(s) on an official ACE Credit by Examination transcript.
